About Hamburg
The harbour city of Hamburg is a popular destination for backpackers. Its mix of historic buildings, modern architecture, laid-back Nordic charm and waterside location creates a unique atmosphere you can’t help but fall in love with. With musicals, art exhibitions, thrift shops, the pretty Alster lake or unique and beautiful neighbourhoods, there’s always something to discover in Hamburg. Get ready to explore one of Germany’s coolest cities.
Hamburg’s hostels embrace the city’s versatile and relaxed vibe. Whether they are modern and stylish, have their own bar, are located right in the centre of the action or keep it quiet and cosy – the youth hostels in Hamburg have it all.
Stay in the hottest parts of the city, from Hamburg’s vibrant and wild party scene - St. Pauli, to the cultural hub - St. Georg, which is located right beside the Alster and is a place full of museums and art exhibitions. Staying within the Altona borough, you will have the famous and alternative Sternschanze right in front of your hostel’s doorstep where great cafés, bars and restaurants and alternative boutiques are waiting for you. If you like it central, you can find hostels in Hamburg’s historic old town.
Stroll along the beautiful Alster or explore the world’s biggest warehouse district, the Speicherstadt, right beside the port of Hamburg. Feeling hungry or hungover? Visit the famous fish market at the Elbe river and try one of the cities specialities – the fish sandwich. Not to miss are the symbolic Landbrücken at St. Pauli’s pier which you can see along the water or from one of the cosy beach bars, like the Dock Hamburg. When the night starts, it’s time to visit the famous Party mile called Reeperbahn. The ‘Uebel & Gefährlich’ is one of the city’s best clubs while techno lovers will also like the China Lounge or the Halo. If you like to mix it up with some nature, visit the beautiful city park ‘Planten and Blomen’ to stroll and relax.
All attractions are easily accessible via public transport, whether you take the train, the tube or the bus. You can have a single ride or a whole day or weekend ticket which saves you some money. Around the harbour and Elbe you can even take a ferry to the water sights. How about trying the city’s favourite means of transport – the bike?
